About

Fullerton Fraternal Readers are a group of men that have been friends for many years. We decided to start a reading group in 2005. Meetings are generally monthly, but we miss occasionally and actually read around 10 or 11 books a year. Around 20% of the books are non-fiction and the rest are fiction.

You can see the list here.

It is a tectonic geologic event for membership to change and we try to schedule so that members rarely miss a meeting. In the group we have a doctor (OB), doctor (GP), dentist, mutual-fund manager, college english professor, calculus teacher and an internet software entrepreneur. We know a little about a lot of stuff and learn a lot from each other.

The all-male makeup of the group was intentional when we put the group together. As one of our member’s said when I boldly suggested we include wives once a year, “this is the one thing I do outside of work or family”. For most of us, book club is our one male-dominated ritual.

We all have children (average of three each); all of our children are in their twenties and thirties. Grandchildren are starting to trickle in.

We spend three or four hours together and probably an hour is talking about the book. The rest of the time we talk about our families and how we view the world. It’s a rare opportunity to talk to other bright men about something other than work or sports.
